5 Proven Ways to Overcome Cocaine Cravings

Cocaine cravings can hit like a ton of bricks, hard, and sometimes fast. For those on the journey to recovery, cravings can feel like the biggest challenge between you and a life of sobriety, or even the life you want.

But the good news is that you’re not powerless and you can overcome these, faster than just letting time heal this wound. Understanding how cravings work and using proven strategies to combat cravings will make all the difference.

Here are five science-backed ways to overcome cocaine cravings and take control of your recovery.

1. Reshape Your Environment

Cocaine cravings are usually triggered by familiar people, places, and objects associated with your past use. Examples would be, the text of the boys asking to go out on the weekend, driving past the pub, or a subtle reminder from a partner… Even something as small as a song or a smell can spark a craving. Seriously.

Science Says: Changing your environment can break the connection between those triggers and cravings. Studies show that people who distance themselves from triggers are less likely to relapse, obviously… 

What You Can Do:

  • Cut Out Triggering Relationships: If certain friends or people around you encourage cocaine use, it’s time to set boundaries or distance yourself. Seriously.

  • Reorganise Your Space: Clear out any reminders of your cocaine use—equipment like shovel key rings, hoover piece’s or syringes. Old texts, or something like clothing you wore often during those times.

  • Explore New Places: Find new hangouts that aren’t tied to your old habits, like coffee shops, parks, community centres, new hobbies, new friends, happy environments. 

2. Use Healthy Distractions

When cravings hit, your brain is usually on autopilot and seeking relief/usage. One of the best ways to reduce those urges is by redirecting your focus.

Science Says: Engaging in an enjoyable activity can help shift your brain’s attention away from cravings and provide a healthy dopamine boost. 

You don’t need science to tell you that, that’s common sense, and we know what they say about common sense… It’s not that common.

What You Can Do:

  • Exercise: Physical activity releases endorphins and reduces stress, both of which can help combat cravings. (For me, I used to party Friday, Saturday nights. But now, most weeks you’ll catch me running on those evenings, and I swear, the rush I get is way more than the drugs I took. I am grateful, energised, and super pumped I’m not abusing, I’m growing!)

  • Learn a Skill: Take up a hobby like cooking, painting, or playing a musical instrument to keep your hands and mind busy. Doing these activities, builds life skills you can pass on.

3. Practice Mindfulness

Cocaine cravings is like a battle between your mind and body. Your body is conditioned for drugs, yet the mind doesn’t want it… It’s a true battle. Practicing mindfulness helps you stay present, observe cravings without giving in to them, and trains your body for who is in control, you, not your body!

Science Says: Mindfulness techniques, like meditation or deep breathing, can reduce cravings by calming the brain’s stress response and strengthening self-control.

What You Can Do:

  • Meditate Daily: Spend 5–10 minutes each day practicing mindful breathing or guided meditation. Apps like Headspace or Calm can help. (This changed my life).

  • Try Grounding Techniques: Use the 5-4-3-2-1 method—name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you taste to bring yourself back to the present. (Pause and Try it right now, I just did, and I’m in a cafe).

  • Journal Your Cravings: Writing down what you’re feeling can help you process and detach from the craving. (This changed my life!).

4. Nourish Your Brain and Body

When your body is tired, cravings can feel stronger. That makes sense, as your guard is down. Proper nutrition and hydration will help stabilise your mood and reduce the physical symptoms of withdrawal, it’s not linear to stop withdrawal’s as each person reacts differently. 

Science Says: A well-nourished body supports a balanced brain, reducing the intensity of cravings and improving your recovery journey.

What You Can Do:

  • Focus on Balanced Meals: Eating healthy foods with help of course, if you eat foods rich in protein, healthy fats, and healthy carbs you’ll likely maintain steady energy levels.

  • Stay Hydrated: Lack of water will make anyone feel more irritable and fatigued, therefore increasing cravings.

  • Supplement if Necessary: Talking to a doctor, or in my opinion a respected personal trainer about supplements like omega-3s or vitamin D is something you can somewhat get your fix… But seriously improve your health, not destroy it.

5. Build a Support Network

You don’t have to fight cocaine cravings alone. In my recent experience, which won’t be related to cocaine, but it’s support. Let’s say I’m afraid of posting something to social media because of hate… Without support, my likelihood of posting is small. But with support, I can post, get hate, and then have reassurance that I can easily overcoming this hate with clarity from my support network. Having a strong support system can provide reassurance, encouragement and accountability when you need it most.

Science Says: Studies consistently show that people in recovery are more successful when they have a solid network of supportive friends, family, or group members.

What You Can Do:

  • Join a Support Group: Groups like Cocaine Anonymous or SMART Recovery offer a community of people who understand your struggles.

  • Find a Sponsor or Mentor: Partnering with someone who has been through recovery can provide guidance and support.

  • Stay Connected: Reach out to friends or family who encourage your sobriety and share your goals.
