Zero-Proof

By Gary Clinton·Addiction specialist·Author of Never Give Up·Updated June 2026

Zero-proof — also called no- and low (or "nolo") — is the fast-growing world of alcohol-free beers, spirits and cocktails designed to taste and feel like the real thing. For anyone cutting down or staying sober, it's quietly rewritten what a night out can look like.

Why it helps

So much drinking is about the ritual: a cold glass in your hand, something to sip, not standing out. Zero-proof gives you all of that without the alcohol, which removes a huge amount of social friction — no awkward questions, no feeling on the outside. It's a natural fit with being sober curious and makes sober socialising far easier.

A drink in your hand, none of the damage. For many people that's the difference between staying out and going home.

One caveat

For some people in early recovery, the taste and ritual can be a trigger rather than a help — mimicking the experience closely enough to stir cravings. There's no right answer; it's personal. If alcohol-free versions keep your nights social and safe, brilliant. If they pull your mind back toward the real thing, it's fine to skip them. Events like Dry January are a low-stakes way to test what works for you.

Frequently asked questions

Are zero-proof drinks good for recovery?

For many people they make sober socialising much easier by keeping the ritual without the alcohol. For some in early recovery, though, the close mimicry can trigger cravings — so it's an individual call.

Do alcohol-free drinks contain any alcohol?

‘Alcohol-free’ and ‘0.0%’ products contain little to none, while some ‘low-alcohol’ drinks contain a small amount (often up to 0.5%). If you want truly none, check the label for 0.0%.

Can zero-proof drinks trigger cravings?

They can for some people, because the taste and ritual closely echo the real thing. If you notice that, it's perfectly fine to choose something that doesn't mimic alcohol at all.
